A simple repeat pattern that only takes 10 minutes!

Creating a simple and stunning floral pattern deosn't need to be complicated and it needn't take you all day!
In fact, this technique I will teach you today is super simple and creates an appealing, balanced pattern that you can use as a stand alone print or add to a collection as a blender.
Once you get the hang of it you can make one in 10 minutes!
Set up your canvas
Create a new canvas at 12 x 12 inches at 300 DPI
Go to the spanner icon in the top left menu, select canvas and toggle the drawing guide on.
Go to edit drawing guide and change the gride size to 2inch squares.

Make your template
Using a monoline brush, draw a circle in the canvas. (Hold down your pen and tap with your finger to get a perfect circle).
Resize the circle it so it takes up a 4x4 square section of the canvas.

With snapping and magnetics on, move it so it is in the centre of the canvas. (the guidelines should go orange when it is exactly in the middle.)

Draw your flower
Here you can unleash your creativity with any type of flower you like!
You could go very simple with one colour or you could go much more complicated with many colours and layers. (Just make sure your flower is not on the same layer as your circle template!)
I’ve gone somewhere in between with this pink and gold flower.

To get the shape of the flower, you could freehand, or you could trace the flower shape from a photo you have taken.
Another alternative is to use a flower stamp brush as a guide. (I’ll let you into a little secret – I have a set of FREE flower stamp brushes on their way to you next week – keep your eye out for those if you’re interested!)
Make the repeat
At this point I always like to duplicate the canvas, as the next stage is to merge all the layers. It’s very helpful to keep a master copy with all the layers intact so you can come back and make colour changes later on!
On your duplicated canvas, merge the layers and make a diagonal mark in the top left and bottom right hand corner. This ensures the whole canvas is selected when you make the repeat.
Duplicate the layer 4 more times so you have 5 identical layers.

Making sure snapping and magnetics are on, move each layer to a corner, leaving one in the middle. You’ll see that the guidelines will go orange when it is in the right place.

Now rub out the temporary diagonal lines you made in the corners and delete the circle template.
You've created your repeating flower pattern!
Scaling down
I always like to provide a few separate scales for my Spoonflower Shop, so to scale it down, you can merge the layers together, dupicate it three more times and scale each one down to a corner. This will also allow you to check it is repeating properly.
How to add texture
This is an optional step, but I often add a texture to a finished pattern, just to add some depth and interest!
The simplest way to add texture to a finished pattern is by adding a seamless texture overlay. This way you don't have to worry about making the texture repeat, it's already been done for you!

Here I have added the Woven 2 overlay from my Texture Overlays Pack over the background and also as a clipping mask to the pattern. I love the way this adds such a tactile quality to the finished pattern with just a few clicks!
So over to you - what pattern will you create using this simple formula? I can't wait to see! Don't forget to tag me on Instagram @jasminehnatkova if you'd like me to take a look :)
